What We Believe

El Morro Church is affiliated with the Church of the Nazarene, which is an international church that began in 1907 and is now ministering in over 170 world areas and composed of over 30,000 churches world-wide.  The Church of the Nazarene is the largest denomination in the Wesleyan-Holiness tradition.  Following is a list of our “Articles of Faith.”

We believe in one God, the creator of all things, who reveals himself as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.(Gen. 1:1, 26, 27; Ps. 90:2; Mt. 28:19; 1 Peter 1:2; 2 Cor. 13:14)

We believe in Jesus Christ, who is fully God and fully man at the same time, who became like us to bring about our salvation. (Mt. 1:22-23; Is. 9:6; Jn. 1:1-5, 14:10-30; Heb. 4:14-15; 1 Cor. 15:3-4; Acts 1:9-11; 1 Tim. 6:14-15; Titus 2:13)

We believe in the Holy Spirit, coequal with the Father and the Son of God, who is active in the world, bringing us to salvation and empowering us to grow in the image of God. (2 Cor. 3:17; Jn. 16:7-13. 14:16-17; Acts 1:8, 1 Cor. 2:12, 3:16; Eph. 1:13; Gal. 5:25; Eph. 5:18)

We believe that the Bible is the Word of God, giving us all we need to know about how to be saved from our sins and the authoritative basis for Christian beliefs and living. (2 Tim. 1:13, 3:16; 2 Pet. 1:20-21; Ps. 119:105, 160, 12:6; Prov. 30:5)

We believe that we are all sinners and we need God's forgiveness and cleansing. (Gen. 1:27; Ps. 8:3-6; Is. 53:6; Rom. 3:23; Is. 59:1-2)

We believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross and that only by trusting in His death and resurrection and acknowledge Jesus as Savior and Lord we are restored to a right relationship with God.  While salvation is God's free gift to us, we accept it. (Rom. 6:23; Eph. 2:8-9; Jn. 14:6, 1:12; Titus 3:5; Gal. 3:26; Rom. 5:1)

We believe that God desires that none should perish and that all should be saved.  Therefore, He has enabled us to turn to Him from sin, but has not forced us to do so. (Jn. 10:29, 2 Tim. 1:12; Heb. 7:25; 10:10-14; 1 Pet. 1:3-5)

We believe that God desires each person to repent, or turn away, from a lifestyle of sins. (Acts 2:38, 3:19, 5:31; Mark 1:14-15; Lk. 13:1-5)

We believe that when we turn from sin and trust in Christ, the old record of sin is wiped clean, and we become a child of God and a part of His family. (Jn. 1:12-13, 3:3-8, 5:24; Rom. 1:17, 3:21-28, 4:5-9, 6:4, 8:1-2; 1 Cor. 6:11; 2 Cor. 5:17)

We also believe that God desires total devotion to Him, in heart and in lifestyle--Lordship.  This process of surrendering accompanied by God's Spirit purifying us is often referred to as entire sanctification. (1 Cor. 6:11; 1 Thes. 4:3-8; Heb. 10:26-31; 1 Thes. 5:23-24)

We believe in the church as a community that confesses Jesus Christ as Lord and is lead by the Holy Spirit through His Word.  We are called to worship, unity, and the work of evangelism. (Mt. 16:13-19, 18:19-20; Jn. 17:20-23; Acts 1:7-8)

We believe in baptism and believe God has called all His people to be baptized as Christians. (Mt. 28:19; Mk. 16:16; Acts 2:38; 1 Cor. 12:13)

We believe in the significance of the Lord's Supper. (Mt. 26:26-29; Mk. 14:22-25; Lk. 22:17-20; Jn. 6:28-58; 1 Cor. 10:14-21, 11:23-32)

We believe in the healing power of God and urge our people to pray for healing. We also believe that God can work through medical science.  (Mt. 4:23-24, 9:18-35; Jn. 4:46-54; Acts 5:12-16, 9:32-42, 14:8-15; 1 Cor. 12:4-11; 2 Cor. 12:7-10)

We believe Jesus Christ is coming again and if we are abiding in Him, we shall be brought into God’s heavenly presence with all God’s saints.  (Mt. 25:31-46; Jn. 14:1-3; Acts 1:911; Ph. 3:20-21; 1 Thess. 4:13-18; Titus 2:11-14; Heb. 9:26-28; 2 Pet. 3:3-15)

We believe everyone shall face the judgment of God with its rewards and punishments.  (Mt. 25:31-46; Mk. 9:43-48; Lk. 16:19-31; 20:27-38; Jn. 3:16-18; 5:25-29; 11:21-27; Acts 17:30-31; Rom. 2:1-16; 14:7-12; 1 Cor. 15:12-58; 2 Cor. 5:10; 2 Thess. 1:5-10)
