Hope For You: Loved While Broken

Scripture Reading: Romans 5:6-11

Focus Verse: "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." (Romans 5:8)

A mother once found her five-year-old daughter in the backyard, tears streaming down her dirt-stained face. The little girl had been trying to plant flowers as a surprise, but had accidentally broken several of her mother's favorite garden tools and trampled the existing flower bed in the process.

"I wanted to make something beautiful for you," the child sobbed, "but I ruined everything instead."

Without hesitation, the mother knelt down in the mud, gathered her daughter into her arms, and said, "Sweetheart, I don't love you because of what you do for me. I love you because you're mine."

This captures the heart of God's love revealed at Easter. Paul reminds us that Christ didn't die for us after we got our lives together, cleaned up our act, or proved our worthiness. He died for us "while we were still sinners"—while we were actively making messes, breaking things that mattered, and failing to live up to what we knew was right.

God's love begins with His character, not our performance. Like that mother in the garden, He sees our broken attempts, our failed efforts, our muddy hands—and He kneels down to embrace us anyway. The resurrection isn't just proof that Jesus conquered death; it's proof that nothing we've done or failed to do can separate us from the love that moved heaven and earth to reach us.

This Wednesday, you don't need to clean yourself up before approaching God. His love found you while you were still struggling, and it remains steadfast through every failure and fresh start.

Additional Passages for Reflection:

  • 1 John 3:1: "See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!"
