People Are Not Projects... They Are People.

Scripture: James 1:19–27

“Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.”
— James 1:19

I knew someone who once decided he was going to “reach his neighborhood.” He made a plan, printed invitation cards, and promised himself he’d have a spiritual conversation with the first neighbor he saw.

That afternoon he noticed a neighbor unloading groceries... arms full, car still running, kids fussing. He walked over, ready with his opening line. But before he could speak, the neighbor blurted out, “Honestly, I’m having a terrible day. My mom’s in the hospital and I’m behind on everything.”

In that moment, my friend realized he had come with an agenda more than a heart. So, he put the cards back in his pocket and simply said, “Do you want help getting those inside?” He carried bags, picked up a dropped toy, and stood in the kitchen for ten minutes while the neighbor talked—really talked—about fear, exhaustion, and the weight of trying to hold life together.

No sermon. No pitch. Just listening. A few days later, that neighbor texted: “Thanks for seeing me that day. Most people don’t.” Weeks after that came a shared meal. And much later... when trust had grown and wounds had air... came the question: “Why are you like this?” The door for hope didn’t open because someone was targeted; it opened because someone was loved.

James teaches a wisdom that feels simple but is deeply spiritual: be quick to listen and slow to speak. People aren’t problems to solve or projects to complete. They are image-bearers to honor. Often the most Christlike thing you can do for a neighbor is to move at the speed of love: learn their name, carry their burden, make room for their story. The Spirit doesn’t need us to force outcomes; He calls us to faithful presence.

Today, ask God to help you see the people near you... not as “opportunities,” but as persons. Love first. Listen deeply. Trust God with the rest.

  • 1 Peter 3:15 — “...always be prepared to give an answer… with gentleness and respect.”
  • Philippians 2:3–4 — “Do nothing out of selfish ambition… value others above yourselves…”

Pray: “Lord, help me listen with love.” Then choose one nearby person (neighbor, coworker, cashier) and ask one sincere question... and don’t rush to fill the silence.
