"Speak, Lord, Your servant is listening"

February 25, 2025 8:59 PM

In 1 Samuel 3, we find the young boy Samuel in the temple, serving under the priest Eli. One night, God calls out to Samuel, but at first, he doesn't recognize the voice. So, he runs to Eli, believing the priest is calling him. After three times of this happening, Eli realizes that it is God speaking to Samuel. He instructs Samuel to respond by saying, “Speak, for your servant is listening.” This moment marks a significant turning point in Samuel's life and sets him on the path to fulfilling his calling as a prophet of the Lord.

Listening for God's Voice

Scripture: 1 Samuel 3:1-10

This passage reminds us of the importance of tuning our hearts to hear God’s voice amidst the noise of our daily lives. Just as Samuel needed Eli’s guidance to recognize God’s call, we often need help recognizing when God is speaking to us. The distractions of life, such as our busy schedules, the news, social media, and our own worries, can drown out that gentle whisper of God calling us.

Much like Samuel, there was a time when I found it challenging to discern God’s voice. One day, overwhelmed with decisions to make about my future, I turned to God, pouring out my thoughts and prayers. I felt a deep sense of peace wash over me, and I sensed God urging me to trust Him with my uncertainties. I paused, took a moment in silence, and asked, “What are You trying to tell me, Lord?” In that stillness, I felt an overwhelming assurance that, regardless of what lay ahead, I was not alone. God was with me, guiding my steps, just as He guided Samuel.

Like Samuel, we can cultivate our ability to listen to God. Here are a few ways to practice this throughout the day:

Quiet Your Heart: Set aside a few moments for silence and reflection. Turn off distractions and take deep breaths, allowing space for God's voice to emerge.  Engage with Scripture: Read the Bible, focusing particularly on passages that resonate with your current life situation. Reflect on what God might be saying through His Word.  Seek Guidance: Talk to trusted friends or mentors in your faith community, just as Eli guided Samuel. They may provide insights or confirmations of what you feel God is communicating to you.  Additional Passages for Reflection:

Psalm 46:10 – “Be still, and know that I am God.”  John 10:27 – “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.”  As we journey through this day, may we practice the art of listening, responding eagerly to God’s loving call in our lives. Let us declare, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.”

Lenten Art Project
We want to bring inspiration and creativity to El Morro Church. We believe our faith can only fully come alive when we engage our WHOLE self and senses. Would you submit art in any medium (photography, glass, painting, sketching, poetry, etc.) representing the theme: Hope Is... We will display it through the Easter season in the foyer to lead us to a deeper understanding of the Hope of Easter!
