What Are You Wearing In Your Soul?

Colossians 3:12–17 (ESV)

Today’s Key Verse: “Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience…”  Colossians 3:12

Have you experienced a day when everything felt “off.” Nothing dramatic had happened... just the usual pressures: too many emails, a tense conversation waiting to happen, a lingering worry you couldn’t quite name. Maybe you got dressed, made coffee, and headed out the door… and then caught your reflection in a window.

It wasn’t your outfit that surprised you. It was your face... tight jaw, furrowed brow, shoulders raised like armor. In that moment, maybe you realized: "I’m wearing something today." Not denim or cotton... anxiety. A kind of invisible garment that made every interaction feel heavier, every task feel urgent, every inconvenience feel personal.

So maybe you paused in the car for sixty seconds and prayed a simple prayer: “Jesus, I’ve been wearing fear. I want to put on what You give.” Maybe you reread Colossians 3:12 later in the day and chose one “piece of clothing” to practice: patience. Not as a personality trait, but as a decision. You slowed your responses, softened your tone, and refused to rush people. The circumstances didn’t magically change... but the atmosphere around you did. Anxiety stopped being the lens you looked through. You weren’t pretending everything was fine; you were putting on a different reality.

That’s the quiet power of Scripture’s language: “clothe yourselves.” It’s not just “try harder” or “act nicer.” It’s an identity statement—as God’s chosen people, holy and beloved. When we remember Whose we are, we can name what we’ve been wearing (resentment, shame, busyness, despair, the need to be impressive) and then, with Christ, change clothes.

Isaiah 61 says God offers an exchange: beauty for ashes, joy for mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a faint spirit. Praise isn’t denial; it’s defiance... choosing to agree with God’s goodness even when the day feels foggy. And over time, that “garment” becomes visible: calmer presence, gentler words, steadier hope—worship that spills into ordinary life.

Today, before you rush into the day, ask: What have I been wearing in my soul? And what does Jesus invite me to put on instead?

Additional Passages to Consider:

  • Isaiah 61:1–3 — God’s promised exchange: ashes to beauty, mourning to joy, despair to praise.
  • Ephesians 6:10–18 — Another “put on” passage: the armor of God for anxious and contested days.

Simple Prayer:Lord Jesus, I confess the garments I’ve been wearing that don’t come from You. Help me take them off and receive Your exchange—compassion instead of harshness, peace instead of anxiety, praise instead of despair. Let my life point to You today. Amen.
