When Tomorrow Tries to Steal Today

Matthew 6:25–34

Key Verse (from today’s reading)

And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?
 Matthew 6:27 (ESV)

A Tuesday can feel like the week’s “pressure point”—far enough from Sunday’s rest and still a long way from the finish line. It’s often the day tomorrow starts shouting the loudest: What if that meeting goes badly? What if the bill is bigger than you thought? What if your health doesn’t improve? What if your kid keeps struggling?

A friend once described how they handled a looming work deadline. They didn’t ignore it; they worked hard. But at night, instead of sleeping, they replayed the same scenarios on repeat—every possible mistake, every possible reaction from their boss, every possible consequence. By morning, nothing had changed about the project—except them. They were more irritable, less clear-headed, and less able to do the very work they were anxious about. The worry hadn’t prepared them for tomorrow; it had robbed them of strength for today.

Jesus’ question in Matthew 6:27 is simple and piercing: What has anxiety ever added? Worry feels productive because it’s mental activity, but it’s often just “motion with no progress.” It cannot rewrite the future, but it can quietly drain the present—peace, patience, joy, even wisdom.

Matthew 6 doesn’t tell you consequences aren’t real. It tells you that your Father is real—present, attentive, and trustworthy. So today, take the problem seriously, but refuse to take it alone. Ask: What obedience is in front of me today? What step can I take? What belongs to God that I keep trying to carry? Then open your hands—again and again—and give Him what you cannot control.

Jesus isn’t scolding you for feeling pressure. He’s inviting you to live as a child who is cared for.

Simple prayer for today:

Father, You see what I’m facing, and You know what I’m tempted to fear. Help me do today’s obedience and leave tomorrow in Your hands. Give me a sound mind and Your peace in the middle of real life. Amen.
