Holy Night: Great Joy!

December 22, 2025

In this third week of Advent, the focus turns to joy—not the fleeting kind tied to comfort or convenience, but the enduring joy found in the announcement that God has come near in Jesus Christ. The angel’s message to the shepherds is a counter-narrative to both the Roman Empire’s proclamations and our modern culture’s false gospels. Joy, in the biblical sense, is not dependent on circumstances or personality type; it is an appropriate response to the truth of God’s presence and promise. Even when grief is real and life is hard, Christian joy is a calm contentedness rooted in the reality that we are part of a bigger story than our stress.

This sermon calls the church to live that joy out loud—in how we speak, serve, gather, and love. The shepherds didn’t receive joy because their problems vanished; they received joy because God had drawn near. We are called to do the same—to be people of joy in a joyless world. Whether it looks like gratitude, courage, hospitality, or peace in the middle of chaos, joy becomes a witness to the truth that light has entered the darkness, and the kingdom of God is already taking root in the here and now.
